Update Your Kitchen

{kitchen design by Jan Michelle Interiors - Longboat Key, FL Penthouse}

Looking to update your kitchen, but don't have the money it takes for a full remodel? Try simple updates such as changing your door pulls, new appliances, new faucet, and new countertop and backsplash. By keeping the original cabinetry you can save! Looking for more of a change? Have your cabinets professionally painted.

Kitchens are a huge expense to remodel, but one of the first spaces to become outdated. Changing the smallest details, such as the door and drawer pulls, can give your kitchen a quick makeover. Door pulls come in every shape, color, texture, and even theme. I suggest that my clients choose a classic, understated pull. This insures that they won't have to update again sooner than necessary. Also, try to be consistent with your finishes. If you have stainless steel appliances, it's a good idea to use a nickle or stainless satin pull.

Appliances can be expensive, but they are worth the investment - both for design and functionality. We all know that stainless steel is hot, but I also like black appliances. If you have a white kitchen, changing your appliances to stainless steel gives the space an immediate update. High end appliances such as Viking and Wolf are always in demand, but may not fit your budget. Companies such as GE and Kitchenaid have come to your pocketbook rescue by now offering appliances that have that sought after "professional grade" look.

Of course, if your budget allows, updating your countertops and backspash is a great way to create a new kitchen. Granite and marble are wonderful options for counterspaces. Other options include quartz and concrete. Typically if you are changing your countertops, you will want to update the backsplash as well. The backsplash is a great way to personalize the space with your own style. Introducing color, texture, and unique materials is always a great idea.

With larger projects, make sure you consult with a design professional. The designer will help you narrow your options and create a look that is cohesive with the rest of your home. Also, designers coordinate and manage the construction and installation processes, which can be intensive and overwhelming.

Photos from the Beach

Photo Of The Week

My favorite photo of the weekend.
I found this great old house right off the main street I drive every day. Through the tree leaves I could see the red of the brick peeking back at me. Today I finally took a closer look. The home is a historic sight and built in the 1850's.

Paint

For those of you who are looking for a quick, inexpensive way to make a change in your home, I suggest paint! It comes in any color imaginable, can be done yourself in one afternoon, and is by far the most cost effective way to make a change.

Design Tips:
  • When selecting a paint color for a main room or hallway, choose a neutral. Neutrals don't distract from other spaces and are an easy transition.

  • Color can be tricky and can look different in different spaces and during different times of the day. Once you decide on a color, first purchase a quart and paint a 2' x 2' square on one wall. Live with that for a few days before commiting to painting the entire room!

  • Small color swatches seen on paint fans are deceptive. What looks like the perfect color usually ends up being much brighter once on your walls. Next time you find a color you like, choose the same color but two-three shades duller. This will ensure the perfect color once the room is complete.

Create A Home Gallery

I am often asked how to best incorporate family photos into a space. My answer: create a home gallery. Choose photos of like coloring...or change them to black and white. Have your designer frame and hang them. A mix of frames and mat sizes creates a "collected" look. A large collection can become a strong design element in any space, yet it keeps your home personal and intimate.

Design Tip: Don't be afraid to frame items other than pictures and incorporate these into your collections. Frame wedding invitations, baby handprints, and plaster imprints of your children's feet.

Inspiration: Fall Color

I love the bold, rich colors of Fall. Used in interiors, they create warmth and invite people into your home.

Penthouse: Longboat Key, FL

Last week I installed a beautiful penthouse in Longboat Key, FL. The owners wanted a clean and inviting space...and I'm so glad they allowed me to add large pops of color...orange color! I incorporated beach accessories such as floating framed sea fans and a collection of silver sea shells in the media room.
