Romantic Homes Magazine

Today's photo shoot went great! The images are for Romantic Homes magazine "Women of Style" issue on stands July. The piece will be about women in their favorite space. So aside from flying to Paris or the coast of Italy, my favorite space is my bedroom. My husband and I recently moved in to a new home which provided the perfect opportunity to re-design the master.

Here are some of the images from today's shoot. Enjoy!

Busy Week

We're moving and grooving over here at JMI. This week is jam-packed with drapery, custom pillows, fabric shopping, furniture shopping, writing specs, phone conferences, Skyping to DC... you get the picture.

Oh, did I mention that we also have to get JM's own personal master bedroom ready for its close-up? That's right, photo shoot time. Romantic Homes magazine will be featuring Jan Michelle in her "favorite space", which will be her master bedroom. So the final details will be coming together to tell a very elegant, Southern story in Friday's shoot. We'll be sure to post photos soon.

Sidenote: For all you Atlantan readers out there, this weekend is Scott's Antique Market! I'm sure going, are you?

Better Homes & Gardens: Kitchen Update

This client's home was originally featured in the 1996 Kitchen and Bath Ideas special edition of Better Homes and Gardens magazine. With an award winning open floorplan featuring a sunken living room, high ceilings, and an abundance of mouldings and windows, you can see why this home provides decorating inspiration. Here's the original article.

Although beautiful, the client was tired of the dated striped wallpaper and pastel floral drapery. So after 15 years, this home received a facelift.
The striped wallpaper came down and was replaced with a soft gold paint. Look at those beautiful transom windows! They fill the kitchen with light and draw your eye up the high ceiling.
The original hardwood floors were sanded down and refinished, giving new life and shine to the entire first level.
Dark granite replaces the white corian countertops in the kitchen and butler's pantry. The hand-painted backsplash was also updated with white subway tile.
Dramatic swag drapery frames the kitchen eating area. The homeowner's own collection of antique furniture is grounded by a custom octagon-shaped area rug, reinforcing the shape of the large bay window.

In the family room, a large sectional and leather club chair provide updated furnishings. A large oil painting hung over the fireplace is much more fitting to the proportions of the two-story room. Personal photos, mementos, and collection of antique vases fill the bookcases.

March Madness

As my husband, and trusty decorating helper, drove from Atlanta to Florida yesterday (don't get too jealous, it's not a vaca ... accepting delivery for a client this morning) I received a very exciting phone call - ...wait for it...

Jan Michelle Interiors is going to be featured in Georgia Magazine's March issue!

The story will give readers great ideas and inspiration on decorating your home for Spring. As we all emerge from our cold, snowy Winter cocoons (except maybe here in Florida!) we're all looking for ways to freshen up the decor of our living spaces.

So although it's a little early...get excited, I am!

Jewel Box Powder Room

Powder rooms are one of my favorite rooms to design. The small space provides a perfect opportunity to create something very special. When a room only needs a small amount of paint, wallpaper, tile, or accessories, you can go for the bold colors and patterns.

This client's powder room was originally designed 15 years ago. (Before pictures below) Although done well, the navy and pastel floral wallpaper was quite dated. The bathroom's fixtures- pedestal sink with crystal knob faucet and toilet- were still in excellent condition so we felt there was no need to update those. This makeover was just about updating the look. In the end, we stripped the old paper, installed dramatic new paper that features a traditional gold design in keeping with the rest of the home, and hand painted the ceiling in metallic gold. The transformation is amazing and the homeowner is very happy with their new "jewel box" of a powder room - a real show stopper!

Designer Favorite: EasyChange Wallpaper

I recently proposed wallpaper to one of my clients, and although they were excited about the idea of introducing pattern and texture to their space, they were already talking about the mess taking it down in the future would bring.

No need to be scared anymore! Let me introduce Sherwin Williams EasyChange wallpaper. Perfect for renters and homeowners who want the look of paper, but not the mess... and who doesn't want that?

This is what Sherwin Williams says about EasyChange wallpaper:
  • Environmentally friendly non-vinyl wallcovering
  • Dimensionally stable - wallpaper won't expand or contract, no more seam separations
  • Breathable - prevents moisture from being trapped
  • Fully washable
  • Remove simply by pulling off the wall - no special tools or solvents needed

Check out these beautiful papers, available in a variety of colors, all from EasyChange. When shopping, look for Sherwin Williams wallpaper books with the EasyChange tag.

They also have plenty of options for children! As baby grows, easily change the wallpaper from nursery to big-kid themes.

Wouldn't these be great on the ceiling?
